Terapad

Shading_sme_blog_post_4

Istock_000000076746xsmall How much would you pay for a new online presence?  Not just a traditional website where you have a content management system to edit and load content, but one that allows for a blog, discussion forums, rss feeds and the ability to accept payments? Add that it is brain dead easy to use and it starts to look tempting.  Rather brilliantly, Terapad give it to you for free.

I love this system. It is perfect for the small business or not for profit.  Use their templates or create your own look. A little outlay on design and you can easily make your site something quite special.

I was expecting support to be non existent when I sent an email query.  Instead, I got a fast and enthusiastic response and a simple answer to my query.

Terapad is well worth investigating and it is refreshing to see a system that is actually far better than the marketing that promotes it.

This is all becoming too complicated for me! You're talking about Terapad and Dennis Howlett is mentioning Twitter, David Terrar mentions wikis and so it goes on.

How the heck do I keep up? I envy you in London - at least you have the chance to meet up regularly. I'm not certain we all have Web 1.0 here!

On a serious note, does anyone have any suggestions how to keep up with technology?

Hi Stuart

Ah, but you don't have the 1 hour commute in every day. Victoria Tube Station 3 que system - once to get in at the station, once to get through the barriers and once to get in the train. Small wonder there is so much coffee available to buy at the station.

As for tips on how to keep up with technology the long commute and a tiny laptop with an internet card work well for me. Otherwise, try iGoogle and Google reader - very Web 2.0.

One day I'll surprise you and appear in the Lakes (with bottle of red wine in hand).

"far better than the marketing that promotes it."
Ouch :D (I did the marketing too, but as you can tell, I'm a geek :-D)

Thank you for your comments, I'll pass them on! Much appreciated.

Hi Stephan

I like the top quarter of the homepage, but you've got far too much content on the home page for my taste. You may already have these books, but see http://www.amazon.co.uk/Prioritizing-Web-Usability-Jakob-Nielsen/dp/0321350316/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b/202-6123555-2753421?ie=UTF8&qid=1180075920&sr=1-6 for some I've found to be good.

It might be worth giving David Koopmans at http://www.mokummarketing.com/blog/ a call.

That said I do really like Terapad.

Na, you're absolutely right! When we started I just placed a flash demo and limited text on the homepage - that worked great visually but then people started to ask to see 'what the others were doing'. So I built this great big mashup(ish) thing on the HP with the top posters, the most popular sites, the latest blog posts and left the flash preso for good measure :-D Content overload so to speak :D

We got a new site coming up but I'll have a look at the books you recommended. Thanks for the links! Give me a shout if you need anything.
