Excel tips

Shading_sme_blog_post_4

Sme_blog_excel_1I should confess now. It's a problem I've had for some years now. I'm an Excel junkie.  It's hard to kick the habit as it's everywhere I go.  I've tried other spreadsheet brands, but they just don't have the depth and finesse of Excel.  To me they just seem like Excel Lite.  No wonder we're all using it.

I came across an Excel article in PC World called Who Knew Excel Could Do That? Ten Top Tips.  It's good, very good in fact.  If you are an Excel junkie or just an occasional user it is well worth checking out. If you're time poor then at least try tip 5.

N.B. Just in case you miss it (I did initially) tips 6-10 are on a second page clickable at the end of the first.

I was fascinated by this. Although I have used some of them myself I was unaware of and most fascinated by the keyboard shortcuts to enter date and time. I was driven to checking out their source, and surprised myself by actually finding them in Excel help, but they are not exactly visible.

I'm not one to talk (still not progressed beyond Excel 2000!) but I wonder whether their development effort would not be better placed on producing a more intuitive help system. I'm afraid that clippy does not do it for me! And I learn more about Excel from Google than I have ever learned from attending a training course or from their help files?

Hi Alastair

I would agree with you the Excel help system could be a lot more intuitive. I only use it as a last resort (those animated office assistants including the paperclip get turned off immediately). Excel 2007 is on the way and features some major updates on the whole look and feel. It will be a big disappointment if the help system isn't better.
